Subject: The Chinese Zodiac

I just have a question. How do you determine which zodiac you are according to the Chinese zodiac. I'm confused because each one corresponds to many different things. By my year of birth, I'm an Ox, but by month I'm a Dragon. Which one do people usually use? Or do they not make associations like this?
