Hi, I have recently begun self-study of Japanese and there are a few things im not clear on that seem to be bothering me a bit. It may seem a bit trivial but just want to do things correctly. Long vowels, how do i pronounce them properly without out sounding them out too long, which would probably make me sound like i talktoo slow to native japanese. If i am to be fluent and develop quick speech, how do i quickly pronounce the long vowel without it being mixed up for a short by the listener?

any tricks? anything to practice? or anything i should look out for? or i shouldn't worry to much about this? also any tips for listening to recognize the long vowels effectively?
does japanese pitch accents help with this?
