Subject: "ô" vs. "oo", "ou"

Takasugi-san, when romanizing Japanese, I notice you tend to use "ô" a lot, rather than "oo" or "ou".

When writing in hiragana, these two are distinct and separate: though they may sound the same, some words require おお (おおき) and others require おう (おういん).

Do you think the difference is immaterial?


And how would you write "おおき" in katakana, "オオキ" or "オーキ" ? (Google indicates a very slight preference for the latter...)
