Japanese don't use "友" so much.
Japanese usually use "友達" when we want to speak "friend".

Because "友" is a little cool.
Japanese are shy. we don't use shameful words easily.

("達" means "many".
but we use "一人友達がいる" when we want to speak"I have a friend".
"一人" means "a person".

"たくさんの友" and "たくさんの友達" mean "many friends".

I consider each one of my friends when I listen "たくさんの友".

"たくさんの友達" mass my friends.
)

but

We often use "友" with other word.

for example "メル友" means "E-pal,Cyber friend".

"メル" is "メール".
"メール" means "E-mail".

Characters of comics do not feel shy.
They can use "友" easily.

In Japanese
たくさんの友と聞くと、友達一人一人を意識します。
ちょっとくさい言葉なのであまり日常会話では使わないです。

達は複数の人を指しますが、別に「一人の友達」とかも普通に使います。

メル友とか言葉を省略する時はよく使います。
マンガのキャラクターは「友」をよく使います。
奴らは恥ずかしがらないので(笑)。
