I hadn't listened to music very much when I first listened to this album. I thought Prince was just a black rock star, but the masterpiece had completely changed my idea. The album was under influence of the hippy movement of 60's, but the fact that Prince is positive (ex. anti-drug) and black made a fundamental difference from the original hippies. I feel an atmosphere of 90's, which is against grungy pessimism, in the album. It is surprising that "Purple Rain" and "Around The World In A Day" were recorded at the same time.

In spite of the commercial failure of the previous album, Prince declared his will to be progressive with this album. The horn section of exploding funk power and the string section of graceful elegance made a new kind of music, which is keen beauty.

This is the re-issue of an album that was intended to release in 1988 but canceled just before its release. It is the strongest funk album of 80's. I remember the pounding of my heart for excitement when I got a pirate copy of the album and listened to it. Listening to black music without knowing it is useless.

This is possibly the best album he has ever made. Every minute is precious in this triple CD set whose total length is 180 minutes. The density of the music on the pop first disc and the experimental third disc is great. The second disc is a little bit worse than them. The album is filled with incredible satisfaction and happiness.
